Wimmera Plains Energy Facility
Learn more about the Wimmera Plains Energy Facility development process and local benefits.
Overview
The Wimmera Plains Energy Facility is a proposed wind farm and battery project to be built in Western Victoria. It will generate wind energy to provide affordable, reliable and clean electricity for homes and businesses in Victoria.
The energy facility will include the construction of a wind farm and integrated battery project and will operate alongside existing agricultural activities. The project is located around 10km north-east of Horsham in Western Victoria.
Project background and timeline
The project now includes a proposed wind farm and battery project located around 15km north-east of Horsham, adjacent to the Jung township in western Victoria. It will connect into existing 220kV transmission line within project boundary, and no new transmission lines will be built. The project involves around 12 landholders and up to 80 neighbours located within 3.6km of the project boundary.
The Victorian Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning granted Planning Approval (Planning Permit PA2000877) in July 2021. The project was then delayed due to uncertainty around regional transmission infrastructure. Key enabling projects are now underway and the project is underway.
The project recommenced in 2024 and a Planning Permit amendment was granted in December 2024. The team are now in the final stages of the development and approvals process. Should the project be approved, it will be delivered through head contractors (Balance of Plant and Turbine Supply and Install). We are working hard to identify and support local businesses to tender for work on the project. Please see ‘Work with us’ for more details. The project is expected to generate up to 400 jobs during construction- both on the site and in the wider community. Once operational, there will be around 10 ongoing local jobs and other flow-on jobs in the region.
